Everyone loves a feel-good story. They give you that warm, fuzzy feeling inside and more importantly they give you hope. This is why American movie-goers love films where the geek gets the girl.
Jen Selk, former arts and culture editor at ION magazine, a publication which specializes in the arts, fashion, movies, music and pop culture, says the relatable qualities that geeks present make audiences more apt to cheer for them in a movie.
"When an audience is presented with two love interests and one is an attractive, cool person who is kind of a jerk and the other is a geek with a heart of gold, in the long run, if the girl is smart, she's going to choose the geek," Selk said. "To the audience that feels like a triumph."
However, getting what you want does not necessarily mean you need to act like a superhero.
To get the girl of your dreams, you need to look inside and show her how you feel, just like the guys in the movies do. Here are a few classic movie examples of how the not-so- cool kid in school won over his fair lady’s heart:
Like Squints from “The Sandlot” – Be spontaneous.
Being a lady myself, I know it’s not always easy to get a girl’s attention. But standing back and hoping something will happen is not going to win over any girl.
Girls like to see that a guy cares about them (and they also like to brag to their friends about crazy things their guys do to show it). So do something crazy, within reason of course. Even if it’s just a one time thing, it will certainly get a girl to think twice about you. Acting like you are unconscious and then going in for the proverbial kill (by faking drowning to get some “mouth-to-mouth resuscitation”) may scare some girls off, but, hey, it worked for Michael “Squints” Palledorous.
Like Alfalfa from “The Little Rascals” – Be persistent.
Girls are sometimes fickle and girls like to feel wanted, so getting your leading lady to notice you may take some time and effort. It will be worth it, though.
Even though Darla brought on so much heartache for poor Alfalfa, his love for her lived on and he showed it by standing up in front of the crowd and singing. It is not always easy for a girl to let down her trust barrier and let a guy in, so don’t give up on letting her know you care.
This does NOT mean 27 text messages, eight phone calls, five Facebook wall posts and three Tweets…all in one day. But consistently taking the time to show love and support will go a long way in getting a girl’s heart.
Like Sam from “Transformers” – Be fearless.
Take one moment to remember who played the leading female role in this movie. Moving on.
No, being fearless does not mean you need to join an army of alien robots to win over your girl, as Sam did with the Autobots to get Mikaela in the end. However, it does mean being confident and needing to be prepared to battle what life throws at you in the course of a relationship if you want to make a girl happy, and honestly to be happy yourself.
Dr. Tom G. Stevens, a retired psychologist and professor at California State University, said that confidence feeds off personal happiness. A happy and confident you “will make you more attractive to anyone who wants to be happy themselves,” he said. Easier said than done, right?
Well, relationships aren’t easy. As cliché as that sounds, finding the strength to tackle issues and putting yourself out there is the way to connect on an emotional level and form a strong bond. Don’t let life’s Megatrons get in the way of finding true happiness.
Like Pauly Bleeker from “Juno” – Be there.
"Bad boy appeal is fine to an extent, but most reasonable women are looking for a guy who treats them well, and in film, geeks display the positive qualities that women are often looking for," Selk said.
Having someone to rely on in tough situations is truly invaluable to a girl. Juno realized how much Bleeker meant to her after he stuck with her during the pregnancy situation, and that feeling of attachment is what girls crave.
You guys will probably never understand the full range of female emotions (sorry, but it’s true), and trust me it is an extensive range. That does not mean you can’t show sympathy for her, and honestly just knowing that you’re there if she needs you means the world to her.
Like Cameron from “10 Things I Hate About You” – In the end, be yourself.
Life is too short to act like someone you’re not, and just like in the movies, the girl will always find out if you’re lying. Cameron only ended up with Bianca after he was completely honest with her with his “tutoring” plot and his plan to set her sister up, and it shows that honesty is valued above all else in a relationship.
No matter what antics you try to win over your lady’s heart, you want her to fall for you in the long run. Be caring and be fun, but don’t be anything that overshadows the true you.
Thanks for the mention. Always nice to see older stories getting new action.
